In an increasingly digital world, design's role is
critical to connect us back to where we came from

THE NATURE OF BALANCE

THE NATURE OF BALANCE

We see nature as the richest source of inspiration; and our work sources knowledge from it's billions of years of Earth's wisdom to create design that balance humanity with nature. The results are designed focused on blending sustainability, wellness, art and craft into design shaped by place and the people who inhabit them.

GENESIS OF INSPIRATION

BORN IN HATCHER PASS

Hatch was born in the rugged wilderness of Hatcher Pass, Alaska; a place where nature defines architecture. In 2017, Founder Christopher Hatch McLean built the practice around that philosophy: that design must emerge from the land, not impose upon it. This origin continues to guide our work from Los Angeles to global landscapes, where we pursue architecture that is both contemporary and timeless, technical and human, poetic and precise.

NO PRECONCEVED NOTIONS

Research-Led Design

Our design process begins with research, guided by three lenses: Art, Science, and Nature. Through this framework, we explore history, material behavior, ecological systems, and cultural narratives to generate designs that are site-specific and future-focused. Each project becomes a conversation between creative intuition and analytical rigor, yielding architecture that feels inevitable.

END-TO-END DESIGN

INTEGRATED DELIVERY

Hatch practices total design integration. Our studio works across disciplines to ensure every detail, from structural logic to tactile experience, is considered within a unified framework. We manage complex projects with the precision of a workshop and the creativity of a design laboratory. Every decision serves the larger composition, aligning beauty, function, and sustainability into one continuous narrative.

Christopher Hatch McLean

Founder/Principal
icon

Christopher is a licensed architect in California, New York and Florida, with over 15 years of experience. Born and raised on a cattle farm in Wasilla, Alaska, he gained a deep respect for the natural environment and understanding of ecology. This led him to work as a carpenter in his later years, building numerous homes where he gained extensive first-hand knowledge of construction. He studied at the University of Washington and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Oregon. While at Oregon, he became one of the leading students in sustainable design and research and won the only internship given to a University of Oregon student to work for Miller Hull, a prestigious architecture firm in Seattle. Training directly under Bob Hull, the Godfather of the Pacific Northwest Modernist movement, deeply impacted Christopher as he was part of the design team for numerous cutting edge sustainability focused projects in the U.S. Upon graduating, he moved to Los Angeles where he worked for WHY Architecture on countless art related projects such as: the Harvard Art Museum, the MOCA in LA, and the Speed Art Museum. After WHY, he played a key role in the formulation of m_Royce Architecture and was the Design Director on over a dozen bespoke artisan constructed projects in Los Angeles. These invaluable experiences led him to launch HATCH In 2017 in order to pursue the notion of a built world that embodies the raw beauty of untouched nature.

Matthew Nichols

Senior Technical Associate
icon

Matthew Nichols developed his passion for architecture and design while studying abroad in Brazil as a teenager. He grew up in the serene landscapes of Oregon and earned a degree in architecture with a focus on sustainability from the University of Oregon. He continued his unique journey by studying architecture in Finland and designing Vitarel, a luxury farmhouse renovation in rural France. These international experiences helped him gain a global perspective and enriched his design philosophy. Matthew’s hands-on approach resulted in the design, construction, and supervision of the Minam River Lodge, which was unveiled in 2017 to worldwide acclaim. The hotel secured a place on Conde Nast Traveler’s Hot List of Best New Hotels in the World. Since joining HATCH in 2019, Matthew has made significant contributions to the brand’s development by combining creative vision with practical execution, consistently raising the bar for all projects.

Shota Ban

Senior Associate
icon

Shota is a creative with over 15 years of experience working in architecture. Growing up in 3 different countries, Japan, Egypt, and the United States, his interest focuses in the intersection of the built world with culture and tradition as well as local climate, creating a one-of-a-kind experience and leaving positive impact to the region. After earning his architecture degree from Virginia Tech, he worked in Japan for several award-winning architects such as Junya Ishigami, and Noiz. Moving to Los Angeles, Shota gained experience working closely with Kulapat Yantrasast and wHY, leading projects and formulating the identity for the office. Since then, he has gained experience working on the contractor side of the architecture business. Most recently, he worked with ZGF on two forward thinking projects, one is the largest all-electric, zero carbon building complex in the US, and another all-electric, carbon-neutral building for UC Merced, planned to provide quality healthcare options in the Central Valley region of California.

Cedric Lalanne

Junior Associate
icon

Originally from Haiti, Cedric is an accomplished designer with a BFA from MassArt and an M.Arch from Cornell University, bringing six years of experience to the team. Before joining HATCH, he worked at Brooklyn-based firm SO-IL, contributing to projects such as the Martin Luther King branch of the Cleveland Public Library, in Ohio, and CubeHouse, an innovative timber office tower in Zuidas, Amsterdam. Cedric’s expertise lies within commercial, cultural, and institutional projects. Cedric’s design philosophy centers on the seamless integration of both analog and digital techniques, informed by critical thinking. This approach allows him to collaborate and coordinate with all members of the team, fostering a holistic design process. As a key team member, he draws from a wealth of experience, poised to enhance the project with his innovative and purposeful design ethos.
